Francis Scott Key -
1797 - Francis graduated with honors from
St. John's College
at the age of 17.
1802 - He married Mary Tayloe Lloyd (Polly).
1807 - At the age of 27, he became one of the
leading lawyers
in the country.
1812 - Although Key was a man of peace,
when the
English fleet entered the
Chesapeake Bay,
he joined the army.
1814- After the Battle at Fort McHenry, Key,
seeing that the
American flag was
still flying wrote
a poem titled,
"The Defense at
Fort McHenry".
It later became
known as "The Star
Spangled Banner".
1890 - The Army and Navy made "The Star
Spangled Banner"
their official song.
1916 - President Wilson ordered "The Star
Spangled Banner"
played at all
official occassions.
1931 - Congress declared "The Star
Spangled
Banner" to be the
National Anthem of the
United States.
